Our organic farm in Escamequita: what grows at the finca
Before Las Planadas, there was a farm. Finca Escamequita is 75 acres of fields and forest right next to the lots, and it is where we grow our fruit and vegetables, without chemicals, in the same fertile soil you find on the lots.
From cattle pasture to orchard
The finca was a century-old cattle farm that produced milk and cheese. Since 2020 we have planted thousands of trees and more than twenty kinds of fruit, alongside coffee, vegetable gardens and medicinal herbs.
Twenty of the seventy-five acres have gone back to forest. The soil, rich in water again, gives exceptional organic produce.
What grows here
The harvest changes with the seasons. Among what comes out of the orchard and the gardens:
- Papaya, one of the pillars of the orchard
- Purple pitaya (dragon fruit), our favourite fruit
- Anona, also called chirimoya, sweet with a creamy white flesh
- Starfruit, perfect blended with a little local honey and lemon
- Ayote, zucchini, cucumbers and radishes
- Tomatoes ripened in the sun
- Lettuces and carrots from the vegetable garden
Jesús, our farmer
Jesús lives on site. He plants the fruit trees, prepares the fields before each season and looks after the gardens. He is also the one who shows the lots to visitors, in person or on a video call.
The same soil on your lot
The lots of Las Planadas start at the edge of the finca, on the same fertile land: a vegetable garden or a few fruit trees are easy to start. A space in the project is set aside for a future fresh-produce store.
